My Future With High School DxD

High School DxD holds a special place in my heart – it was the first series that captivated me and compelled me to seek out the novels. It was an experience that sent me on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. I’m sure many of you enjoy this series for much more than its face value.

When I first started translating in 2015, I never imagined myself getting so deep into it. I was just like any other impatient sod who wanted the translations to be done sooner. But then I realised – I’ve spent countless hours watching fan-subbed anime, reading fan-translated manga, and fan-translated novels. None of that was free, it was at the expense of someone else’s time. My motivation to translate has always been to return what I have received from the community and hope that it inspires others to do the same – a so-called equivalent exchange. The High School DxD community is vast, and I’m incredibly grateful to those who have contributed to the wiki, subreddits, fanart, translation, and other domains.

Going forward, I’ve decided that it would feel natural for me to finish my work with the last volume of the original series. A lot of expectation has fallen on me to continue the series, and it’s honestly a bit too much for me. While my love for the series runs deep, it pains me to see how it gets treated. People often complain about the quality of the translation or its grammar, or how long it takes for each release. I’ll say this now – that doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is the fact that no one does anything about it – I realise that a lot of readers aren’t fluent in English, but if they’re capable of pointing such things out, then they’re more than capable of helping to change it. Baka-Tsuki is open to all, and anyone can contribute, but the page histories always look the same. I’ve always wanted to go back to volume one and rewrite everything from the beginning to turn it into a vivid and enthralling narrative, but I spend my time translating instead because it’s something that far fewer can do. Aside: If you are trying to edit on Baka-Tsuki, you’ll need to make an account to get access – the protection level has been lowered so that anyone with an account can make changes.

Like many, I’d love to see English DxD novels in a physical format, but there isn’t much point in having a book that isn’t close to perfection. High School DxD has somehow evaded licensing up until now, and even if it were to be licensed, I have serious doubts over whether such adaptions could do it justice. So I’ve taken it upon myself to do this – I’m planning to license the novels next year so that they can become true physical novels. Realistically speaking though, even if I did register a business, it’s unlikely that Kadokawa would give the license to a completely unknown third party. But that’s okay, I’d be happy just to unofficially print a few hundred copies at my own cost and distribute them to those who are deserving – that’s how far I’m willing to go. What about you?

For once, what happens next might be up to you. I’m not averse to continuing my translations for the series if no one else wants to take it, but I’d like to see more people contribute back to the community by giving their time.

hello zxzxzx I have a question when the next short stories of the dxd will come out. you keep translating or you left it I love your translation so I wanted to know if you continue with the dxd translating it

Various circumstances have changed for me and I no longer have as much time as I once did to translate stories. My priorities at the moment are assisting Leo with his translations, and if time permits, translation of Seikoku no Ryuu Kishi. DxD short stories will unfortunately be on hold until I’m able to commit more time to translation again.

After DxD project is abandoned by Baka-Tsuki, will you continue to translate the series? Cuz I would love to read your work.

I would def buy all the vol’s if you did print them as physical copies, and i am willing to sign and get others to sign a petition or anything so you can take it to the company to show that you have a following interested in purchasing the printed copies, so that way maybe they will be alil less hesitant to give you the printing rights if they see that their is a market waiting for it.

you will be right about Kadokawa about hesitant about giving the rights as they own 25-30% of the shares with Yen Press but HS DxD isnt with Kadokawa its under Overlap and Overlap at this point is still independent you shouldnt have any problems as far as I know

Hey zxzxzx. Just read about you, and gotta admit, I’m really grateful for all that you’ve done for DxD. I’m not sure if it’s clear from this tiny comment, but I’m pretty confident in my English skills, but not so much with Japanese. I’d like to offer you all the help I can with your translation process, as a token of gratitude. So, is there anything I could help with in the translation process? I’d be really happy to help. Hope to hear back from you soon.

I don’t think anyone will translate it. As far as I know, there isn’t much new content in the memorial edition, it’s mainly just a recap on highlights of the series, some character bios, and that kind of stuff. EX is also included in it, but that’s already been translated.

    Hi ZXZXZX.

First of all, i would like to thank you for translating the DxD novel series until now. i would really want to help you to translate the Novel. And since I just recently got my N2, scored 153/180, i would be glad if i can contribute to DxD translations.

I have read novels such as :

    文豪ストレイドッグス外伝:綾辻行人vs夏彦京極

    かがみの孤城(今読んでいるところです)

Is there any way that i can contact you ? i have just finished reading the 25th Volume and would be glad to help you translating the Light Novel for the fans 😀

    Hi zxzxzx,

Thank you for willingly giving a large portion of your time and energy to bring dxd to where it is right. I do admit that though I have been an avid fan for years, I am guilty of being a freereading bypasser who haven’t contributed to the novel. I have no familiarity with the Japanese language but I am quite confident with my proficiency in English. I would be willing to extend my help if you can tell me how. I could probably help in grammar correction and sorts if you would let me.

    Best regards,

welp, just reading this, sorry about late response…

as you can see, my English is only Middle-Lowest at most, rather than just make more mistakes and get laughed at, usually i just commenting about the story….

its not like i don’t give a damn about the grammar mistake, when i spot one and gonna write comment to point it out, there’s already someone in comments below pointing it out, so i just write comments about the story instead…

pardon me if i can’t help you with anything beside commenting random stuff, i really enjoyed the story and your works, and pray you good luck, if they would like to join hands with you for publishing stuff, i would gladly throwing my money and collect all the volumes.

I feel shame to say this is my first post on the blog. I felt the urge to say thanks for all of your work this years, DxD was the first LN I reached to and personally got hooked very fast, so unlike others I have the pleasure to read, it is special. Every volume you have touched is filled with quality and effort and almost everyone of us who have been here since the beginning (almost before Code-Zero dropped the ball) can understand and appreciate all the time you have dedicated for the sake of the big community of this series.

I will respect your decision for the future of Shin DxD whatever it is, passion is indeed a very powerful source of motivation to do something without expecting anything in return, but passion alone is not always enough to keep up years of hard work consistently like you have been delivering  week after week for us to enjoy.

I also share the guilt with many others of being a silent bystander most of this years, so I would be happy to try and help a bit with the upgrades for the volumes at B-T that you have already finished. Although English is not my native language and I’m not as fluent and reliable as most of the other people here I will stick in at Slack to give my 2cents on the edits whenever I can.

On a side note, I agree with the other users that said it would be interesting to try and reach J-Novel or other publishers to see if there is any possibility for them to collaborate on your project for some sort of licensing.

    Best of luck!

It has been nearly a month since I’ve been able to access the internet because of my semester exams. So, I was a bit late to find out about this situation but I hope everyone in this community reads my comment. Now-

    To zxzxzx,

First of all, thank you very much for the translations up until now and I hope you continue with the translations but if you do leave, I will respect your decision.

To everyone in this community including zxzxzx,

Like I said before, I do hope to see the translations continue but zxzxzx is seeking committed people in this community contributing their own time for the betterment of the series like zxzxzx himself does before making any decision. But before I make any half-assed commitment like- “I’ll help out in editing”, I have a few questions for which I’d love to have the answers from anyone who knows because I have a limited amount of knowledge. I’m quite good when it comes to just English because English has always been my 1st language since when I was in the nursery. Whether if it’s spelling or grammar or construction of sentences, I can do a job. On the other hand, I don’t know how to read or write Japanese. As for my questions-

Q.1 – Do I need to know how to read and write Japanese to help out in editing?

Q.2 – What does editing exactly means? Is it just correction of spelling and grammatical mistakes or is there much more to editing than the correction of the mistakes?

Q.3 – What is the total process of editing?

Finally, I have to say a few things and I need to apologise as well. First, I need to apologise because I’ve always been a spectator in this community without any kind of contribution. So, I am sorry. Second, I’ve always enjoyed zxzxzx’s content without properly thanking him. So to zxzxzx once again, Thank you very much for all your hard work. Third and last, I’ll expect anyone and everyone in the community to help me out with the answers to my questions above.

Hi Tathagatra, to answer all of your questions at once, what you’ve described in point two is fairly accurate. Knowledge of the Japanese language is not required. The degree of editing that you perform depends on how comfortable you are with the English language and how much time you’re willing to spend. It can range from simply spelling and grammar fixes, to full restructuring and rewording of entire passages.

If you’re interested, join my Slack workspace via the link in my sticky post and we can discuss things further.

So how are the tests going? I know you have RL priorities (<– Usually said just before a request to change said priorities.), but could you maybe share a DxD rough draft? From reading these posts it’s clear that your work is appreciated. With the offers of help posted here perhaps a collaboration could be done here? It seems clear that the people who care the most about this work come here. Then you could “finalize” it and post the completed work to Baka?

As I have said before: You’ve really grown as a translator and I think your work is first rate. With each posting your feel for the ethos of DxD-Verse has become more natural. That you will only continue to improve is certain. I’m going to [presume to] suggest that as the leader of a team based at your own site, you can explore even more vividly the Realms of all of your projects.

So i just want to thank you for what you have done. High school DxD was my first anime. It helped me get through a hard time in my life and still does to this day. I have watched it more then a dozen times and read the PDFs more then a few times. Im very grateful for your time. I”m not a translator and im very new to anime/manga in general. However i would love to donate my time which i have a fair amount of for anything that would help. I am even looking forward to the other Projects you are working on since they are also part of my favorites. Thanks again.

I’m glad you said this.  I was under the the misconception that making comment on the quality of the translation and perhaps offering to edit it would be rude, actually i thought it would be very rude.

I have always been grateful to my translators and especially you as DXD is my favorite series.

Now that I know your feelings on it I will take it for consideration.

Hello, and thank you for your hard work.

Regrettably, I can’t help with anything unless it is some grammar-checks and naming consistency, because of my lack of skills with any other language aside from Spanish (my mother language). Even so, if you would like me to contribute some, I would likely help.

Would like to someday translate the novel to Spanish, but translating from a translation doesn’t sound right, and my lack of knowledge in Chinese or Japanese is tremendous.

Sorry to hear that you’re leaving DxD. DxD was the series that got me into light novels and Slashdog was my first ever translation of my own. I don’t think I’ll be able to help much with your goal of improving the existing translations due to being focused on translating myself, but I certainly understand the feeling. EX has been in desperate need for improvement for some time, in particular when it came to simple things like naming consistency.

I can try to make myself available for translation help though, and if it’s for EX or Slashdog I’ll help out as best as I can.

I have read it maybe 3 time already and I must say that there are some few grammatical errors here and there but I’m not gonna point it out because I can’t read japanese characters very well. If you want, I could help with the editing on my spare time. Cheers from Philippines!

I have been a fan of this series for so long I can’t even count it. I have always wanted physical copies of the novel but could never justify buying something that wouldn’t be able to understand. If English copies are made of the series I would 100% purchase them. Seeing as this is what the end goal is I’ll do my best to make changes to the translations to make them as error free and cohesive as possible without the translation and story being lost to such changes. If this would help you to continue in the great service you are provide me and many more people it is the least I can do as part of this community

This would probably be my first comment/response here.

Firstly, I take mine hat off to you for the awesome work that you do – especially for folks like me who’s hooked onto LN but are mostly under the grace of translators to enjoy them. I started my LN journey with HighSchool DxD & Campione and haven’t looked back ever. So in a way, your translations mean a lot since HighSchool DxD is at the top of my LN reading list. (Heck, I lost count of the number of times I’ve re-read it!). Like so many others you might have noticed in the comments, I sincerely hope you continue with your translations for HighSchool DxD until the author brings it to its finale. Having said that I’ll respect any decision you might be making regarding future volumes of DxD – no matter the outcome.

I read the comments before writing here and as expected, the internet is also riddled with folks with no respect for contributors, particularly for those who do it because they love it. I’ll admit that I’m usually a mute spectator, just consuming content without pitching in to edit the content. But your observation has struck a chord with me. I haven’t thanked properly nor have I made a monetary contribution here. So here’s it – Thank you for your work! I suppose you’re already used to dealing with haters and naysayers, even then – I will say the usual cliche – Ignore them 🙂 Your have followers who respect you and the work you do.

As far for the quality of your translations, they’re top notch! Heck, even J-novel makes mistakes and they have a fleet of translators and quality checks too. I especially like the way you translate so that the nuance isn’t lost – that is hard to pull off and even harder to maintain. I believe you usually do the final proof reading by yourself before posting. At the cost of sounding intrusive, how about offloading them to a willing volunteer who has a good command over the English language? I’d bet there would definitely be people to take this up (I mean I definitely would :))

I’m definitely going to start contributing back. So I’m going to thank more, contribute more and hopefully become a fan translator myself one day.

Lastly, your goal to license HighSchool DxD is super cool not to mention lofty too. The work it requires is in a totally different league than fan translations. But I’ll definitely say it’s not impossible. If you say you will be giving away printed copies of your translations to those who bought the original copies – I would buy the original copies just to get the printed copies of your translations and if possible offer any help if needed.

That’s how far I would be willing to go.

Please keep continuing with the fantastic work that you’ve been doing all along.

yipes man, I think you might be letting the internet trolls get you a bit. personally I found your translations to be of good quality so when you mention about all these hate comments about your “lack of good grammer” or “bad tranlations” all I can say is you forget some people are just plain dumb and can’t accept quality work if it’s in a different translation style than one of the other previous translators. (I think some of those complaints were directed at Daniel young but got mixed up with you for some dumb reason) also internet trolls… don’t forget they do exist, pointlessly and aimlessly too.

however about some of the comments about your release speed… well… I’m inclined to half way agree with some of the complaints on that end. but hey, regardless of the speed being slow at times you still release the chapters in good quality and are reliable in getting it done at some point. so no matter if it’s done slowly or not, you will get it done, and that’s a lot more than some translators can have said about them.

regardless I honestly think your promotion of getting a more productive fan base is a good thing, but this holding the series hostage thing (unless I’m not reading your post correctly) is fairly childish. and I REALLY wish you wouldn’t be so perturbed by what’s likely to be a handful of trolls with more than one account each. but alas your human too, so I can’t exactly fault you for getting annoyed. (though a better option might’ve been to disable comments or ban certain IP addresses from commenting [no idea how but I assume it’s possible] when the trolling becomes too much and non-constructive)

as for your plans on going pro: I hope you have good success, I think with some half decent editors backing you your work could conceivably sell well… provided the series itself sells well of course. I genuinely think there are only a handful of fan translators that are of your quality or better so I think the series would be in good hands if you go pro with it.

best of luck to you ZXZXZX and all your endeavors. 🙂

all said with love and good intentions from a lazy leecher. 😛

Hi zxzxzx, I know your pain, I to love High School DXD immensely and find it a great injustice that they have not been officially licensed and released. But fear not I might have a solution that would help everyone, have you ever approached J Novel Club with this project and your passion for it? I think it could go very well for they just established a relationship with Kadokawa, and since you already translated most of DxD you could present your work to J Novel and offer to handle all the editing and coveting your past work into official format thus saving them a ton of time and money. If that dosn’ work you could also present to Seven Seas Entertainment with the same strategy or start your own patreon or kickstarter because Im sure a lot of us DxD fans would support you. Anyway I dont want to tell you what to do I just really love your work and appreciate your passion, and I think if you apply both of these in pitch to any of these companies you might have a good shot of getting High School DxD officially published!!!

    Hey zxzxzx,

I want to start by saying that this is my first post and like you DxD is what got me into novels. I really appreciate that you took your valuable time to make it so less experienced/abled fans could enjoy this content. It means a lot to me, I’ve been a fan since the first season aired and I don’t really watch anime or read other LNs anymore but I always check back on DxD when I have time to binge. I’m thoroughly surprised that you are even plagued with this issue, I can’t believe that some people are so entitled to complain about what someone is doing at their own leisure so we can enjoy content that we wouldn’t normally be able to. It honestly baffles me, and I’m truly sorry for how shitty some people can be.

Moving forward, I’m pretty out of the loop right now, I had to catch up from 17 so I’m not sure which volumes actually need attention. I was using the pdf version so I wasn’t sure if the mistakes I saw had been fixed or not. Ultimately, I just thought that it wasn’t a big deal so I stopped highlighting halfway in. I completely respect your decision to stop at 25, but if all you’re asking for is a helping hand, then like others have stated, I’m sure there’s a decent amount of fluent speakers that can help with grammar or the likes

I’m more than willing to help in any capacity that I can. I hope whatever you decide to do going forward is something you’re truly happy with and thanks again.

Hay triple zx i am from canada. Thx you a lot for what you have done. I really admire you for what you have done. You really had done  a great job. Keep it up and never look back.

Thx you at last for droping dxd. I am really happy. At last your brain get the correct mind. You should have drop dxd before. You at last decide not to tourture and laugh at us anymore by making bakas waiting for next volume. The only thing you had done well is making people all over world fell happy that there english is better then someone else. You had done very bad work till now until this decision. Whenever i saw comment requesting you to translate shin, i wanted to write a comment but never do it. I stoped as i thought that your shitty brain will not stop to harress other fools on this blog so it might be pointless to say. But thx god (or devil) that you at last decides to stop.

Now just stay away from shin and never look at it again. Many fools will now try to make you come back but never listen to them. Whenever a person take a good step, other person would try to make him fall. But you should not fall. I will be happy even if no translate shin as nothing is better then yours.

Also your future idea is also shitty as hell. You will not get license not because you are unpopular, but because you…….

Just keep doing good work and again thx for your decision. Now i would expect people to replay comment like ‘just shut up’, ‘he is doing it as a hobby’ and many many more old comment which i had already seen (written on other comments). I woluld also expect some people to find mistake in my english to take me down, but its the symbole that those are really just a small foolish person.

I haven’t read a worse comment in a while, complaining about someone’s English, then making horrendous mistakes and if that weren’t already enough, ending with a message to all those who notice…

My Dude, go and let someone teach you to respect hard work. It might not have been perfect, but YOU could have changed every mistake you found on Baka-Tsuki (even tho I really appreciate that you didn’t because you’d have made the translation rather worse than better)

He is (as you said already) doing all this work for FREE so stop being an ass and be grateful for his hard work and effort to deliver us a translation of something we all like. Even if it takes half a year, even a year it’s damn fast for someone who is doing this in his free-time as a hobby without an actual translation group or team. Do you even realize how foolish you sound?

Judging by your comment, you would not manage to do one single chapter equivalent to the quality of ZX! (I mean if you’d even speak Japanese or Chinese, which you don’t because else you’d not be here)

So please for God’s sake just stop acting like this, be a nice human being, rather than hating on people you don’t even know a god damn thing about.

      Thank You.

Really now? You’re actually degrading the guy’s work, which he does for free, and personally insult him because the quality of the translations isn’t up to your apparently godly standards? Then why are you even here, embarrassing yourself while writing this horrid libel? The only foolish person here is you, as well as a downright disrespectful one and a shining example as to why some people don’t deserve freedom of speech.

Let me just start by saying that I appreciate all the effort you put into translating these LN. It doesn’t sound like this is a farewell address but a call for help. If that’s the case we need a bit more assertiveness and direction on your part. I want to help and I’m sure there’s at least 100 others that want to help too but I don’t know what, where, and how to do that? As a de facto leader on this translation effort perhaps you could do a bit of strategic division of labor and crowd sourcing here. Let’s say you get a rough translation of a chapter done you could make a post here on your blog or reddit or wherever saying “hey I got this section done I’m looking for proofreaders and checkers.”. You could have a master Google Doc that everyone  works on. These are just examples but my point is that if you want help you can’t expect to get it passively. I for one had no clue you wanted some help until you made this post.

I hope I do not sound too much like a jerk in this post because that is not my intent. My day job is a project manager of sorts and I can tell you from experience the most important thing for getting a job done is communication. so take it or leave it but my advice is to hand out volunteer community jobs or goals.

On a last note I would love to buy a physical copy of these books in English.

Hey zxzxzx, just wanted to say how much I appreciate you translating the highschool dxd series. I have the same passion for the series as you do.

About you latest post about the future of the series, I really hope that you can keep translating the series.  It’s a great series and you do a great job of translating it.  Not many people do what you do and put their own time in translating a series. About you saying about people complaining of errors, your only human, people make mistakes, and I guaranty other people would make many more, plus who cares what they think. I’m going to be honest, I did see error here and there but I didn’t care, and I didn’t know I had the ability to correct and now that I know I can, I’ll help fix the ones I see if that what it takes to help keep this series translation going. Also what i do when I’m waiting for a new volume is i reread the series, i have 3 times so far, shows how much i love it, and for the people who whine about when the next volume will be done, why not reread the series of you love it so much.

So thank you for what you are doing and i hope you continue with this series, and ill gladly help out with error and stuff if that’s what it takes, and if not i completely understand. YOU ARE THE MAN ZXZXZX!!!

And i hope someone else is willing to take over soon; honestly i would contribute as well to keep this going but i dont know where you get the novels and i dont even speak any other lan uage apart from english but anyways a glad to hear you are well and thanks for translating this far. High School DXD has actually been licensed in the United States. I just found this out a few days ago. So far though they have only published up to volume 11, so they are quite a bit behind you, which is unfortunate. Even though they have changed the series name, I do wish you were continuing to translate through the current story line of the Tournament.

I was one of the people that were around when Noman/codezero started the project on baka tsuki, and was one of those people that made the mods on animesuki forums lock the thread because we had an extreamly long thread.

For the better part of this year I’ve been compiling ideas for my own custom dungeons and dragons dxd module, and frankly without people like you translating the novel I don’t think I would have ever been able to have the thought of making that module.

I just want to say thank you for your hard work, and if you do get some form of an official lisense for dxd I will definitely be grabbing it from the shelves of a book store. \^,^/

Hey zx, I’ve been following the translations since 2012 when Code Zero was still translating the series. I’m truly grateful that you’ve been able and willing to continue with the series despite the time and effort it takes to translate (I can’t imagine how much personal time you’ve given up to do it). As far as editing the existing translations, I’ve recently gained some free time and would be happy to edit as much as I possibly can. I’d be happy to start from volume 1, but I’d like to run the edits that I make to the translation by you first so as not to change the tone of the story or characters (I understand if you don’t have time for that though). More than anything, this is just my way of expressing my gratitude toward you and Zero as these novels helped get my mind off of things when I was going through a rough time. Once again, thanks for everything you’ve done for this series.

I appreciate your translations. You have no idea how long it took me to find a trustworthy translator for the LN. After I found Baka-Tsuki, I thought that was all, and then I found your website, and I check in every day, lots of time each day. I truly hope you translate Shin DxD, because I don’t want you to end your magnificent work. I don’t care how long it takes, and I neved did, because I knew it was worth the wait once you were finished. If others complain, just ignore, because they’re not worth being annoyed over. Again, I sincerely appreciate your translations and I hope you don’t end with Volume 25.

Yeah Yen press would absolutely destroy it, honestly, I’m just happy to be able to read it. Grammar isnt an issue in anything I read, if an apostrophe is in an odd place, I just read on.

I think people just like to complain, honestly that needs to stop. Punctuation and grammar are so different in other languages that perfection isn’t possible; readers should appreciate more complain less.

I really hope you can continue the translation of DxD because it really is a good novel and you do an excellent job translating it. Give it a try and contact J-Novel or Yen Press to see if you can license it, if you manage to do it, I would buy it (even though it’ll take a long time until they reach vol.25) Good luck with everything!

  66. Gary29 says:

Have you considered contacting J-Novel Club? They’re the only licensing group I would trust for a worthy physical release of the novels. Although they won’t license DxD unless they see a lot of demand for it, and it getting a physical release would probably depend on how popular the digital version is first. They hire fan translators too, though it would be a bit complicated in this case unless you re-translated every volume that was TL’d by someone else.

Ishibumi recently expressed his desire for localized versions of the LN’s on Twitter as well. You translating + J-Novel licensing, editing + coordinated community support would give us a worthy physical release.

For j novel club, it is very hard for physical release. They only had a very few physical release series. Well they have good speed as they only release digital.

And taking dxd to license is a risky choice. Why?? Because in usa mostly people only know dxd manga. And those who read ln may already read ln by fan translation. So only a few hardcore fan will buy it (but again most people know its manga).

It’s been ages since I last left of dxd..

V21 was the last volume I read as I recall..

And I got to say that even though your grammar may not be perfect, they are way too close…

I recall that I’ve pointed out a few mistakes in your translations. And well it’s kinda hard to find it..

If I return back to volume 1(which I might someday of I get bored), I’ll surely point out some mistakes to you..

Ps I don’t have account in baka-tsuki and won’t be making one… So I’ll just directly inform you of I find one when I start again or in v22…

Anyways, you’re doing a great job there… You’ve been providing us the translations…

And aren’t you translating it from Chinese instead of Japanese?? I remember you saying that once… So I got no complains there…

And I’ll say again, you’re doing a great job. Keep it up man. Go till the end of dxd. You’ll always have my support (at least not in monetary terms ?).

Just to weigh in, as someone who has followed your work ever since you’ve took over from Code Zero way back when, what was it, volume 16,17 at the time? , I feel really grateful for the translations you’ve so kindly provided over the years. It probably wasn’t easy, and pay-off wasn’t that huge either, but you sure as hell got the community’s appreciation, baring few black sheep.

I’ve been reviewing stuff for a while, and while I took a break because I suck at time management, you’ve done marvellous. So, on that note, once again, a huge THANK YOU is in order. That said, I do hope you’ll continue with the series, seeing as we can just barely catch a glimpse of the finish line. Just until the end, I hope, is not that unrealistic of a request. Any side or short stories that come after…Well, that’s a talk for the future, innit.

If you were to print some hundred-or-so copies unofficially, with covers and such, count me in as one of those people who would buy them.

zx, your translations on the DxD series is one of the few things that make me happy in life now. I just now made a new account to edit whatever grammar mistakes I can find. Also, even though I have not brought the original copies, I’d still like to buy your physical copies that you make if i could. That being said, screw the people who complain about the quality or time releases. ungrateful people don’t know how to appreciate a translation that was done during free time. I hope this reply gives you motivation, even if it’s a little. Ganbatte, zx

Zxzxzx I am forever grateful to you for all the amazing work you’ve put into translating this series. Thank you for being such an amazing person. Putting that much hardwork into something takes a level of skill, dedication, and resolve that few people in the world have.

I’m sorry that people have complained in the past about minor grammar issues on the earliest volumes of DxD translated before your time. People seem to complain no matter what though about all sorts of nonsense. In my opinion the translations are excellent and the story works much better in the format and style it’s in now. Localization of a series is not always a good thing because it can lead to changes in the story and various meanings being lost. The DXD anime dub is a prime example of this given how much it changes what’s going on in the story in a way that just doesn’t work as well.

That being said, I know that editing takes almost as much time as translating. I truly wish I knew Japanese at a level where I could assist with translations outright, but it’s going to take me years I’m sure before I can reach that level. I do know English though and am prepared to offer assistance with that side of it in any way possible. Also, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the fandom in the future. I recommend posting on the subreddit as well because many people frequent it that aren’t always checking here. I’d post your message officially on there. I can’t imagine a world with DxD being left untranslated. It’d be a terrible shame if that happened and there are many people out there willing to help ensure it does not. I’ll do whatever I’m able to to help, and I know many others will as well!

@zxzxzx he’s correct in a way. Localization can mean that many things may get changed and loss of various things. Some things are better left fan translated. But the final decision is yours to make.
I hope you’ll complete the entire series (ENTIRE SERIES, THIS and SHIN HIGH SCHOOL)
I hope I could help you as well. I’m currently learning Kanji, the rest kana are done. So if I do manage to learn Japanese, I’ll help you out

Actually, Zx may not need to continue after Volume 25, since there’s someone on the High School DxD Universe Discord who has said he’ll do it (after finishing up translations on the some of the side stories).  It’d be cool if they can both work on it by each doing a different Volume (i.e. if Zx does Shin Volume 1, the other guy could do Shin Volume 2, and etc.).

      Thanks mate 🙂

Looks like someone has shared my post on reddit, so I guess it’s just a matter of people following through with their actions.

Your dedication to you passion is as strong as ours to reading your translations ?. I have occasionally edited on baka tsuki, but I am not driven enough to stick with it.

That said, if you’re really interested in licensing dxd, have you considered contacting yen press, or seven seas or even j-novels and try to work something out? You hold the license and translste, they edit and publish kind of deal.

It might work out if they get the license and have me on board as an editor or something, who knows? It’s too soon to say.

@zxzxzx I love your translation and sorry hear people complain about little mistakes. I honestly hope you stay doing translations for DxD. I really would love if you translate Shin High School DxD. no one else translates DxD and I look forward to the translation you do. what would it take for you to keep going with dxd to Shin DxD and on 2 the future?

I just want to see more people step up and contribute. There’s barely anyone who makes changes on Baka-Tsuki aside from the translators, and I could probably name all of the contributors on the wiki off the top of my head. There are thousands of readers, and the number of contributors just isn’t proportional.

DXD means a lot to me as well. I have no problems with your translations.
There isn’t a eng translation and they are rattling on errors. What an ungrateful bunch.
I really like your translations as you’re the only one who translates it. And I hope you’ll continue it with the Shin High School DxD as well. Here’s some good wishes to you for the upcoming future!!

DxD means a lot to me as well, A friend got me into it back in 2015 as well, and its had a pretty big impact on our lives. I posted a few translation to the subreddit as Crimsonrhodonite, and RT’d some slight tl’s of Ishibumi-sensei’s twitter, and really want to help out the series in any way I can. I agree that it doesn’t get the justice it deserves without this LN localization. i have some experience with jp, some mastery, but I mostly just do it analog with my didtoonary. I would LOVE to be able to help in any way you need it. Thanks so much for all the great TLs man.

I’ve never seen anyone complain tbh, but that probably has to do with the fact I built my own section of the fanbase over the years by getting pretty much all my reader and writer friends into it. Still havnt found someone that dislikes it after giving it a serious chance.

I remember editing a tiny bit a few years ago, but the format to do so was pretty bad so I didnt get through it. But if it keeps you going I’ll gladly help fix some stuff, its just there honestly isnt all that much. Alot of the so called issues are purposeful translator style bits so I’m unsure of what can actually be changed.

Also over the years my friends have gifted me the first 12 volumes so I’m set there. I love my friends.

Wow people actually complain .. What a load of ungrateful noobs.

The errors and such don’t bother me I just enjoy reading it. After all it’s closest we are going to get to reading them. Unless something happens

I work in Enforcement field. It’s a 24hr duty. But I am willing to give a hand in correcting grammatical errors. I don’t want a fan to stop doing what he love. Thanks for the work done and for works to be done.

    Well said good man!

Thanks your work many translations have become to be possible. I’m so grateful to you and code – zero as well as to Daniel Yang.
It also saddens me that so many readers could fix some mistakes,
but they prefer to point out those things and do nothing.

In Polish translation community, which is mainly based on English
translation, I see that people correct mistakes and sometimes
rewrite whole paragraph to make it more localized, feel lighter to read.

But it was only possible thanks to you and others. I hope you will
get license to print English translation and what comes with it.

You took the right decision, I always wanted to translate dxd but I couldn’t because I don’t even know the slightest bit of Japanese. I tried machine translation but they were messed up. All I have to say is thank you for your hard work.
